Secondary Traumatic Stress Learning Community

Supporting Our Child Welfare Staff: Together We Thrive

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), Division of Social Services (DSS), in collaboration with the Center for Child & Family Health (CCFH), is excited to offer a series of  monthly calls focusing on the prevention of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and Workforce Stress. These calls are designed with you in mind—our dedicated child welfare staff—providing a space for collaboration and growth.

Purpose and Objectives of the Monthly STS Support Calls

Responding to Staff Feedback

In response to the invaluable feedback from the STS Input Sessions held in January 2024, where many child welfare staff emphasized the need for enhanced support and additional resources to manage secondary traumatic stress, build community, and increase resilience.
We have created a series of monthly calls to directly address these needs.

We hope you will take this opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and gain practical strategies tailored to your role and region.

  • Peer Support and Shared Learning

We'll offer a platform for ongoing discussion and support with opportunities for both structured learning and open discussion

  • Best Practices

Together we'll examine effective practices and strategies to sustain and improve workforce wellness at a personal and organizational level

  • Reflection and Resilience

We hope to create a dedicated space to process the unique stressors of working in child welfare and promote a culture of compassionate resilience

Format and Logistics

Which Call Do I Choose? Calls are organized by role and region—the Eastern, Central, and Western parts of the state—ensuring more relevant support. Please choose the call series that aligns with your position and location. The time and day of the week will repeat each month. To see the dates, click the registration link.

I'm not a direct line worker or a supervisor - can I still join? YES! All are welcome. You can decide which call makes sense to join, or reach out to us and we will help direct you!

Where and When: Each call will be 60 minutes and will take place on Zoom. Each series will repeat at the same day and time each month. The series will conclude May 2025. Calendar invites for each date will be sent after you register

Flexible Agenda: Each call will have an overarching theme, but will also adapt to the needs and interests of the participants

Attend-As-Able: A one-time registration is requested to gain access to the link and calendar invitations. You are welcome to attend as many or as few calls as your schedule allows.
